If you want to help in the incident command post/search base and do not want to go out in the field to get muddy, cold, wet and bitten by every bug then this is the role for you. Your possible assignments as a non-field responder include logistical or administrative tasks like handing out radios, assisting with paperwork, getting pizza, setting up the command post, traffic or parking control. Then this course is for you. You will learn all the basic fundamentals to deploy in the field with SAR.

Learning Goals: NASAR SARTECH IV / Awareness Level - Self Study
Overarching Goal: Upon successful completion of this course, participants will possess the foundational knowledge required to function as an effective support resource for a Search and Rescue (SAR) mission and understand their role within the Incident Command System from a non-field perspective.
Knowledge Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Define SAR and its Components: Explain the purpose of Search and Rescue and describe its four primary components: Locate, Access, Stabilize, and Transport (L.A.S.T.).
Describe the SAR System: Identify the key roles within an Incident Command System (ICS) structure and explain the general responsibilities of Command and General Staff.
Identify SAR Resources: List the different types of resources commonly used in SAR operations (e.g., ground teams, K9 units, aircraft, technical rescue teams) and their general capabilities.
Understand SAR Terminology: Define essential SAR and land navigation terms, including Last Known Point (LKP), Point Last Seen (PLS), Probability of Detection (POD), and clue awareness.
Recognize Lost Person Behavior: Describe the basic categories of lost person behavior and understand why this information is critical for search planning.
Explain Information Management: Articulate the importance of accurate documentation, communication logs, and information flow within a SAR incident.
Understand Legal and Ethical Aspects: Describe the basic legal and ethical considerations for SAR personnel, including confidentiality and acting as a representative of their organization.
