ABOUT THE COURSE

The "Hug-A-Tree and Survive" program is one of the most respected and effective child survival programs in the world. Developed by Ab Taylor, With rights given to The National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR), it is a preventative Search and Rescue (SAR) program designed to teach children a few simple, life-saving principles to follow if they become lost in the outdoors. Founded in the memory of a young boy who was lost, the program’s primary goal is to replace a child's natural fear and panic with simple, memorable actions that dramatically increase their chances of being found safely.

Core Principles: What Children Learn
The program is built around a few easy-to-remember rules that directly counteract the most common and dangerous mistakes a lost child can make.
Hug a Tree! This is the most important rule. Children are taught that as soon as they realize they are lost, they should find a friendly-looking tree and stay with it. This prevents them from wandering further, which is the single biggest challenge for searchers. Staying in one place makes the search area smaller and keeps them safe from potential hazards like cliffs or rivers.
Stay Warm and Dry. Children learn the importance of protecting themselves from the elements. The program famously teaches them to always carry a large, brightly colored trash bag in their pocket. If they are lost, they can tear a hole for their head and wear it as a makeshift raincoat and shelter, helping them stay warm and dry, and making them more visible.
Make Yourself Big and Heard. Children are taught how to help searchers find them. They learn to find a clearing or open space near their tree to make themselves more visible from the air. They are also encouraged to carry a whistle and are taught to blow it in sets of three, which is the universal signal for help.
Your Rescuers are Friends. The program addresses a child’s natural fears. They learn that the people and search dogs calling their name are friendly and are there to help them. Children are encouraged to answer any calls they hear, even if they feel scared or shy.
Addressing Common Fears
A key part of the program is addressing the specific fears that can cause a child to hide from their rescuers:
"My parents will be angry with me." The program reassures children that their parents and everyone else are not mad, they are just worried and want them back safely.
"I'm scared of animals." Children learn that wild animals are usually more scared of humans and that making noise with their whistle will help keep them away.
"What is that man screaming?" Children learn to not be scared of people that are searching for them and they don't have to hide for those who go look for them.
