Course Overview
The Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR) course is the essential intermediate step for any individual committed to becoming a competent and effective field searcher. This rigorous, hands-on program provides the core knowledge and practical skills needed to operate as an active member of a search and rescue team. Moving beyond the awareness-level topics of introductory courses, FUNSAR immerses participants in the realities of SAR operations, blending comprehensive classroom instruction with demanding field exercises that take place in all weather, day and night.
The curriculum is built upon three foundational pillars: Survival, Support, and Search & Rescue. This course is the NASAR standard for preparing individuals to challenge the SARTECH II certification, which is the nationally and internationally recognized benchmark for an operational field searcher.
The Pathway to SARTECH II Certification
FUNSAR is the primary preparatory course for the SARTECH II certification. The comprehensive written exam at the end of the FUNSAR course is the same exam used for the SARTECH II written requirement. Upon successfully passing the FUNSAR course and its exam, a candidate is deemed to have met the knowledge requirement and has one year to successfully complete the separate SARTECH II practical skills evaluation to earn the full SARTECH 2 certification
