ABOUT THE COURSE

4 days (36 hours)

The National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR) SARTECH I certification represents the pinnacle of achievement for a field-based search and rescue professional. This advanced certification is not an introductory course; it is a rigorous evaluation designed for experienced SAR personnel who are ready to assume the responsibilities of a Crew Leader (Ploegleider).

Achieving SARTECH I signifies that an individual possesses the advanced knowledge, technical skill, and leadership qualities necessary to manage a small search team effectively and safely during complex SAR operations. While NASAR is a US-based organization, its SARTECH standards are widely respected and accepted internationally as a comprehensive benchmark for professional excellence in ground search and rescue. For European responders, it provides a robust and verifiable credential that demonstrates a high level of competency.

SARTECH 1 Backcountry Search Technician / Crew Leader

Learning Goals: SARTECH I / Crew Leader

Overarching Goal: Upon successful completion of this certification, the SARTECH I Crew Leader will possess the advanced knowledge, leadership skills, and fieldcraft necessary to effectively manage a search and rescue crew, make sound tactical decisions, and ensure the safety and effectiveness of their team during complex SAR operations.

Knowledge Objectives

By the end of this program, the candidate will be able to:

  • Apply Advanced ICS Principles: Explain the specific roles and responsibilities of a Crew Leader within the Incident Command System (ICS), including interaction with the Operations Section, understanding the Incident Action Plan (IAP), and properly completing operational forms like the ICS 204 and ICS 214.

  • Demonstrate Small Unit Leadership: Describe and apply key leadership principles for managing a small team in a stressful field environment, including motivation, communication, conflict resolution, and maintaining crew integrity.

  • Analyze and Mitigate Risk: Identify potential hazards in a given operational area, conduct a thorough risk assessment, and implement appropriate safety measures and contingency plans for the crew.

  • Develop Advanced Search Strategies: Explain complex search theories, including Probability of Detection (POD) factors, and develop effective tactical plans for various search assignments (e.g., hasty, area, evidence searches).

  • Integrate Specialized Resources: Describe the proper procedures for integrating with and supporting specialized resources attached to a crew, with a primary focus on working effectively with a SAR K9 team.

  • Master Briefing and Debriefing Procedures: Articulate the critical components of a comprehensive team briefing (based on the IAP) and a thorough post-mission debriefing to ensure all relevant information is captured.

  • Manage Crew Welfare: Explain the principles of managing crew member fatigue, nutrition, hydration, and the signs of critical incident stress, and describe appropriate interventions.

Practical Skill Objectives

By the end of this program, the candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Lead a SAR Crew: Effectively lead a small team during a simulated, multi-phase search mission, making appropriate tactical decisions, managing crew members, and communicating with command.

  • Execute Advanced Land Navigation: Successfully navigate a complex, multi-leg, off-trail course at night, using only a map and compass to find all points within a specified time limit.

  • Manage Hazardous Terrain: Demonstrate the ability to rig and manage simple rope systems (e.g., a fixed handline) to safely assist a crew in traversing steep or hazardous terrain.

  • Organize Patient Transport: Supervise a team in the construction and use of an improvised litter to effectively package and move a patient over a short distance.

  • Conduct an Operational Briefing: Deliver a clear, complete, and effective pre-mission briefing to a search crew based on a provided operational plan.

  • Manage a Mock Emergency: Respond appropriately to a simulated emergency within the team (e.g., an injury to a team member), demonstrating proper emergency procedures and reporting.

  • Demonstrate Equipment Mastery: Present and explain the function of the advanced equipment required in a Crew Leader's 24-hour pack, justifying the inclusion of specific items related to leadership and safety.
